Movement skills that last a lifetime

Our Kids and Teens classes are all about building strong, confident and capable young athletes in a fun and supportive environment. We focus on teaching safe, effective movement patterns while improving strength, fitness and coordination. Every session is designed to be engaging and challenging – developing kids and teens physically, and in confidence, teamwork and resilience.

Sessions are loud, competitive in the best way and full of variety. Kids learn to squat, jump, hang and carry properly – the same movement foundations that support every sport they'll go on to play – while picking up teamwork and resilience along the way.

We're a five-minute drive from Berkhamsted high street, with parking right outside, and families come to us from Northchurch, Tring and Hemel Hempstead as well as Berkhamsted itself. Sessions run at 16:00 on a Tuesday, straight after school, and 11:30 on a Saturday morning.

Older? Our CrossFit Teens class (15–18) takes the same approach with more structured strength work.

Inside a session

What an hour of CrossFit Kids looks like

Every class follows the same shape, so children always know what's coming – and always leave having learned something.

  1. Step 1

    Warm-up games

Tag, relays and movement games that get everyone laughing, moving and ready to train – and settle the nerves of anyone who has just walked in for the first time.

  2. Step 2

    Skill of the day

One movement taught properly: a squat, a press, a jump, a hang or a simple gymnastics shape. Small groups, plenty of coaching, no rushing.

  3. Step 3

    The workout

A short, varied effort – usually five to twelve minutes – built around what they have just practised. Loads and reps are set for each child, never copied from the adult class.

  4. Step 4

    Cool down and chat

Stretching, a quick game and a word with each child about what went well. Parents get a wave and an honest update at pick-up.

Carry-over

Better on the pitch, the poolside and the mat

Most of the children who train with us also play something else. Strong, well-coached basics make them harder to knock over, quicker off the mark and far less likely to pick up the niggles that come from moving badly under fatigue.

Sports our kids play alongside training here: rugby, football, hockey, netball, swimming, athletics, gymnastics, cricket and martial arts.

What parents notice

  • Better posture and body awareness, at home as well as in sport
  • More confidence trying something they aren't immediately good at
  • Energy channelled into an hour of hard, happy work
  • Friendships across school years, not just their own class

Parents' questions

The things parents ask us first

Is CrossFit safe for children?
Yes, when it is coached properly – and that is the whole job. CrossFit Kids is not adult training made smaller. Sessions are built around bodyweight movement, light implements and technique, with a qualified CrossFit Kids coach watching every rep. Children learn to squat, hinge, jump, hang and carry with good positions, which is exactly the protective skill set they need for school sport.
Does my child need to be sporty or fit already?
No. Plenty of our kids do no other sport at all, and plenty are county-level players looking for extra strength work. Every session is scaled, so both get a good hour.
What should they wear and bring?
Trainers, shorts or leggings, a t-shirt and a full water bottle. Nothing else needed – we have all the equipment.
Can I stay and watch?
Absolutely. There is seating at the side of the gym and parents are welcome to stay for the whole session, especially the first one.
How do we start?
Fill in the short kids enquiry form. We'll come back to you with a session time and their first class is free, with no obligation afterwards.
